What are you doing this weekend (or your next scheduled time off work)? At the end of the weekend will you be glad that you did what you did or just glad that you didn’t have to go work? When was the last time that you had so much fun over the weekend that by Monday you were actually a pleasant person to be with?
Who decides how you spend your weekend? The answer to this one, by the way, is you – unless you are under 18, serving Her Majesty in some way or highly physically dependent on someone. In even these cases you probably have more say than you admit.
Sure, there are other people we may choose to consider as we plan our weekend but the point is, we choose how we spend it / invest it.
Here are some questions that may help you plan your weekends. Tick them off after you’ve thought about them.
¨ Will working this weekend make me more productive?
¨ Will I have become a greater person (that’s in character rather than girth)?
¨ Will I have achieved something of lasting worth?
¨ Will the stories I tell my chums about the weekend keep them awake?
¨ Do I need another lamp shade / hanging basket / garden ornament (delete as appropriate)?
¨ Will anyone die if I don’t mow the lawn?
¨ Will I feel more excited about life come Monday?
¨ Can my kids tell the difference between me and the sofa?
Do you treat your weekends as priceless opportunities and plan them in advance or do you stumble into them, bimble through them and climb out of them on Monday mornings? Is an unplanned weekend of chilling really what you need? Will this refresh you, inspire you and recreate your mind? Are you actually tired or are you suffering from depressed energy levels due to frustration, tunnel vision, disappointment or boredom?
A friend of mine said that it was impossible to feel depressed whilst doing star jumps (This was just before he electrocuted himself on the overhead lighting). I think he meant that we have a lot more control over our emotions and energy levels than we are prone to believe.
A life coach will work with you to ensure that your time away from work is as relaxing, restful, refreshing, recreational and renewing as possible. Weekends will become more than escape and recovery from work. They’ll be enjoyable and they’ll be time invested. Enjoy your weekends all week long.
